I get it. I've read all the grumbling and hating on social media about Madonna performing in the Super Bowl halftime show. She's too old looking (like you have more toned arms?) She has an annoying British accent (true, but what this has to do with singing, I have no idea.) Her new song with Nicki Minaj is terrible (OK, maybe it is.)
Advertising Age even asked, "Is Madonna the Worst Choice Ever for a Super Bowl Halftime Show?" Wow, ever?
But as a woman who grew up in the 1980s, Madonna will always be one of the first singers girls my age wanted to dress like. Be like. When she debuted her first album in 1983, she was the epitome of cool. My sister and I memorized all the words to her songs and were glued to MTV when her videos were on (especially "Material Girl.") Who didn't own a pair of fingerless lace gloves and countless bracelets? Remember teasing your hair and then tying it up with a lace bow? Your mom probably wouldn't let you wear a "Boy Toy" belt, but you wanted to.
If you haven't heard by now, Madonna's Super Bowl set list was leaked. If it's to be believed, she'll only be singing two songs pre-1990: "Vogue" ('90) and "Holiday" ('83). That makes this '80s girl sad and nostalgic.
In honor of the '80s, here are 10 songs I'd like to request from Madonna:
- "Lucky Star" – from her self-titled debut album Madonna (1983)
- "Papa Don't Preach" – from her third studio album, True Blue (1987)
- "Material Girl" – from her second studio album, Like A Virgin (1984)
- "Crazy For You" – from the "Vision Quest" soundtrack (1985)
- "Like a Prayer" – from her fourth studio album, Like a Prayer (1989)
- "Dress You Up" – from Like A Virgin
- "Burning Up" - Madonna self-titled debut album
- "Into the Groove" – from the "Desperately Seeking Susan" soundtrack (1985)
- "Where's the Party" – from True Blue
- "Express Yourself" – from Like A Virgin
